Bento Box Handbuilding

Work by Leanne Gan

Build a strong foundation in handbuilding in this beginner-friendly Bento Box workshop. Participants will learn essential techniques such as slab building and basic construction methods to create a functional ceramic bento box, along with an introduction to surface design and personalization.

This one-off workshop offers a hands-on experience combining clay, food, and craft. While you build, you’ll enjoy a selection of small bites inspired by traditional bento, creating a thoughtful and immersive connection between the object and its use.

The class will begin with a 20-minute instructor demonstration introducing slab-building and foundational handbuilding techniques used to form the base and sides of a ceramic bento box. From there, participants will have time to explore the process and build their own piece with guidance throughout. Participants will also have the option to request a customized hand-drawn design or phrase from the instructor to personalize their work.

This workshop is ideal for beginners but welcomes participants of all levels. Those new to clay will receive clear, step-by-step guidance, while more experienced makers are encouraged to refine their skills and experiment with form and design. One finished piece is included and will be glazed and fired by the studio. Finished work will be ready for pickup in 3–4 weeks.
